Sarasota is a city that encapsulates the essence of Florida life. Nestled on the southwestern coast, it combines white sandy beaches, incredible nature spots, and diverse arts, culture, and historical sites. Whether you’re a history buff, a beachcomber, or someone just looking for a slice of paradise, Sarasota promises an incredible vacation.

I have to admit that I am a bit of a Sarasota addict, and I discover something new every time I visit.

To help you make the most of your time in this Florida gem, here are my 15 best things to do in Sarasota.

1. Hit the Beach!

With some of Florida’s most beautiful coastlines, one of the best things to do in Sarasota is of course to hit the beach! Some of my favorite seaside spots include:

Siesta Key Beach

Located just a short drive south of downtown Sarasota, Siesta Key Beach is a barrier island jewel. The combination of azure waters and pristine sand make Siesta Beach one of the most beautiful beaches anywhere in the country and a top choice for families, couples, and solo travelers alike. As its name suggests, Siesta Key Beach is also the perfect place for an afternoon snooze!

Lido Key Beach

Situated to the west of downtown, Lido Key Beach is set on a picturesque barrier island. With its proximity to St. Armands Circle, a shopping and dining paradise, Lido Beach offers more than just sun and surf – it’s an entire day’s adventure. Sarasota’s Lido Key is less talked about than Siesta but it is definitely one of my faves!

Venice Beach

Venturing further south, Venice Beach is often dubbed the “Shark Tooth Capital of the World” due to the huge numbers of prehistoric shark teeth which are a magnet for tourists looking for a souvenir.

Manatee Beach

On the southern tip of Anna Maria Island off Florida’s Gulf Coast, Manatee Beach has a serene atmosphere and family-friendly amenities that make it a peaceful getaway from the busier city beaches.

2. Get Cultural at Sarasota’s Museum and Art Galleries

If sun and surf aren’t enough, Sarasota is a hub for art enthusiasts and history buffs alike. Here are some of my top art gallery and museum recommendations to add to your Sarasota trip itinerary:

Sarasota Classic Car Museum

The Sarasota Classic Car Museum chronicles the evolution of automotive design and technology. Housing an extensive collection of vehicles, offers a fascinating overview of the automobile industry’s progression through the decades. Sarasota Classic Car Museum also has three amazing event spaces to rent out which are the ideal location for a special occasion.

Circus Museum

Sarasota was once the winter home for the Ringling Brothers Circus, and the Circus Museum captures that history. With a vast array of artifacts, from vintage posters to props, this museum offers insights into the world of circus performances and their significance in Sarasota’s past.

4. Get Wild at the Sarasota Jungle Gardens

Spanning over 10 acres, the Sarasota Jungle Gardens is one of Sarasota’s oldest and most popular attractions, and for good reason. It’s a tropical adventure right in the heart of the city, offering a blend of history, nature, and entertainment.

Home to over 200 native and exotic animals, from parrots and macaws to Florida alligators, Sarasota Jungle Gardens is the place to be for wildlife enthusiasts. There is a petting zoo offering younger guests the chance to interact with animals in a safe environment, a butterfly garden with hundreds of vibrant species, and a huge population of flamingos that wander freely through the park.

5. Sarasota Farmers Market

Founded in 1979, the Sarasota Farmers Market is a vibrant weekend staple in downtown Sarasota. Its stalls sell an array of fresh produce, artisanal bread, local crafts, and more, giving a peek into the area’s bountiful produce and talent. Frequented by both locals and visitors, it offers an excellent opportunity to sample the local flavors, engage with artisans, and soak in the friendly community vibe.

6. Get Back to Nature

Sarasota and its surrounding areas are a dream come true for nature lovers with something for everyone. Here are some of the unmissable spots for all you outdoorsy types:

Marie Selby Botanical Gardens

Starting in the heart of the city, Marie Selby Botanical Gardens is an urban oasis, with a diverse collection of tropical plants, koi ponds, and bamboo forests. Located right in downtown Sarasota, you may think that the area would be noisy, but the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens is a perfect escape from the urban hustle.

Myakka River State Park

Venturing a bit further, Myakka River State Park, one of Florida’s oldest state parks, showcases a sprawling expanse of wetlands, prairies, and pinelands. Whether you’re looking to camp under the stars, hike through diverse terrains, or spot some incredible wildlife, Myakka River State Park offers a genuine taste of Florida’s natural beauty.

Lake Manatee State Park

Located just east of Bradenton, Lake Manatee State Park spans over 3,000 acres, centered around the stunning freshwater Lake Manatee. Established in the 1960s when a dam was constructed across the South Fork of the Manatee River, the lake now serves as a vital reservoir for the region. Its vast expanse offers an array of recreational activities, including fishing, kayaking, and numerous hiking trails that wind through diverse habitats.

Island Park

Island Park in downtown Sarasota offers serene views of the water, making it a favorite spot for picnics and leisurely walks. With its picturesque backdrop, it’s also the ideal location for snapping some great vacation photos.

Bayfront Park

Bayfront Park is an iconic spot in Sarasota that overlooks Sarasota Bay and offers panoramic views of the water, marina, and the distant keys. Bayfront Park is an oasis of green amid the bustling city, with wide open spaces, meticulously manicured gardens, and shaded picnic spots.

South Lido Park

Positioned at Lido Key’s southernmost tip, South Lido Park offers a blend of beach and park experiences with a beautiful beachfront and stunning nature trails that weave through the dunes and mangroves. If you are a birdwatching enthusiast like me, it is also a fantastic place for spotting diverse species of native and migratory birds. This area is also home to Ted Sperling Park, the go-to place for kayaking among the mangroves that tangle around South Sarasota County.

Payne Park

A former baseball stadium, today Payne Park has some of the best things to do in Sarasota for visitors of all ages including a skate park, circus-themed playground, and scenic ponds.

Oscar Scherer State Park

Oscar Scherer State Park is home to Lake Osprey, the only freshwater lake in Sarasota County. Oscar Scherer State Park is a haven for freshwater fishing and birdwatching and also boasts several fantastic hiking trails.

7. Explore Siesta Key Village

Located right on Ocean Boulevard, Siesta Key Village is brimming with boutique stores, quaint eateries, and vibrant bars. It is one of the best spots in Sarasota for souvenir shopping, fresh seafood, and seeing local bands perform. Siesta Key Village is awesome any time of the day but it really comes alive at night. Whether you’re in the mood for some retail therapy or you’re hunting for the perfect sunset dinner spot, this village has it all.

8. Hit the Open Road on the Legacy Trail

Connecting downtown Venice to Sarasota, the Legacy Trail is a haven for cyclists, joggers, and walkers. This paved pathway, stretching over 10 miles, offers a scenic journey through the diverse landscapes of the region. Along the way, you’ll pass Nathan Benderson Park, cut through Bobby Jones Golf Course, and encounter a number of information signs detailing the area’s history and ecology.

Among its sea life, the aquarium has sea turtles, playful otters, and a plethora of colorful fish and also offers a glimpse into the intricate scientific research being conducted to preserve and understand our oceans better.

Only a few hours from Sarasota, Tampa Bay offers an array of experiences that make a day trip well worthwhile. From watching the Buccaneers in action to hitting the rides in Busch Gardens, there is a lot of fun to be had! My personal highlight is the historic Ybor City, known for its vibrant Cuban influence and the aroma of hand-rolled cigars filling the streets. If you are in Tampa Bay in the evening, Tampa Riverwalk is dotted with restaurants and parks and is the perfect place for a picturesque stroll.

13. Shop Til Your Drop at the Mall at University Town Center

If shopping is on your itinerary, the Mall at University Town Center is your go-to destination in Sarasota. This upscale shopping complex, situated conveniently between Sarasota and Bradenton, hosts a plethora of renowned international and domestic brands, ensuring a shopping experience that caters to all tastes and budgets. The mall also has a number of dining options, from gourmet restaurants to casual cafes.

14. Check Out the Sarasota Nightlife

When the sun sets on Sarasota’s stunning beaches, the city comes alive with a vibrant nightlife that caters to both locals and visitors alike. My favorite spot is definitely downtown which has street musicians, open-air cafes, and rooftop lounges with amazing views across the city and the bay.

For sports enthusiasts, a visit to Sarasota would be incomplete without taking in a game at Ed Smith Stadium. Home to the spring training sessions of the Baltimore Orioles, this stadium offers fans an intimate setting to watch top-tier baseball. Even if you’re not a die-hard baseball aficionado, the ambiance, enthusiastic crowds, and classic American ballpark snacks make it an experience worth having.
