It’s fair to say that Cocoa Beach, Florida is the quintessential American beach town! Nestled on the stunning east coast about an hour’s drive from Orlando near the historic Cape Canaveral, it has long been one of the most popular vacation destinations in the country.
Cocoa Beach is often referred to as the gateway to the Space Coast, a nod to its proximity to the Kennedy Space Center and the area’s storied history of space exploration. However, it’s not just rocket launch audiences that are drawn to Cocoa Beach; the city’s pristine beaches, great food, and an array of fun things for the whole family make Cocoa Beach a haven for beachgoers, and adventure seekers alike.

1. Explore the Cocoa Beach Pier
A visit to Cocoa Beach wouldn’t be complete without a stop at the iconic Cocoa Beach Pier, a cherished landmark that stretches out into the azure waters of the Atlantic Ocean, offering breathtaking panoramic views.
But the Cocoa Beach Pier isn’t just a scenic spot; it’s a bustling hub of activity. The Cocoa Beach Boardwalk is perfect for a leisurely stroll and is lined with fantastic shops, bars, and restaurants. My personal favorite is the famous Atlantic Ocean Grille, where you can dine right over the water’s edge.
For those seeking a little adventure, Cocoa Beach Pier is also a great spot for fishing, and you may even be able to catch your own dinner!
2. Check Out the Florida Surf Museum
Cocoa Beach, Florida is renowned for its legendary surf culture, and the Florida Surf Museum pays tribute to the history and figures of surfing in the area.
Inside the Florida Surf Museum, you will discover an impressive collection of surf memorabilia, vintage boards, and exhibits that showcase the evolution of surfing in the Sunshine State. One of the standout features of the museum is its homage to legendary surfer Kelly Slater, a Cocoa Beach native and one of the greatest surfers of all time. You can explore his achievements and contributions to the sport through a dedicated exhibit.
3. Catch a Live Show at the Cocoa Village Playhouse
If you’re seeking a dose of live entertainment in Cocoa Beach, the Cocoa Village Playhouse is the place to be! Nestled in the heart of historic Cocoa Village, this community theater has been a cultural cornerstone for the city for decades.
The Cocoa Village Playhouse hosts a wide range of productions throughout the year, from Broadway musicals to local productions. The theater itself is a charming and intimate venue that allows you to immerse yourself in the magic, making for a truly special night out.

The Kennedy Space Center is home to some amazing experiences. Some of my favorites are the Space Shuttle Atlantis exhibit, where you can get up close to a real space shuttle orbiter, an astronaut training simulator, and an IMAX cinema offering immersive visual and audio experiences.
Merritt Island also houses the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, and if you’re lucky, you may even get to witness a rocket launch!
5. Take a Kayak Tour Through the Thousand Islands
When visiting Cocoa Beach, a day trip to The Thousand Islands is the perfect outdoor adventure. Kayak tours through the tropical mangroves are the best way to experience the sea life and other wildlife unique to the winding waterways that meander among the islands. On the other hand, if you are looking for a more high-octane experience, you can also take an airboat ride across the waters.
If you are visiting the Thousand Islands during the summer months, a guided tour of the Banana River Lagoon is a must. It is this time of year that you will catch the Bioluminescence, a natural aquatic light show created by tiny glowing organisms. It is an incredible sight and one of the absolute highlights of my Cocoa Beach trip!

Cocoa Beach is renowned as one of the prime surfing destinations in the United States. The combination of consistent waves, warm waters, and a laid-back atmosphere makes it a surfing paradise for both beginners and experienced surfers.
If you’re new to surfing, there are several surf schools and rental shops in Cocoa Beach that can get you started. They will take you to spots where the waves are often gentle, making it an ideal place to learn and have some fun.
7. Load Up At Ron Jon Surf Shop
Ron Jon Surf Shop has been a staple of the Cocoa Beach scene since 1959 and at a colossal 52,000 square feet, it is one the world’s largest surf megastores. The shop has hundreds of surf boards, wetsuits, sports gear, and everything you need for your beachside escapades. If that’s not enough, the shop’s interior is an experience in itself, with glass elevators, tranquil fish tanks, and flowing waterfalls that cascade from the ceiling down to the floor.
8. Relax and Unwind at Lori Wilson Park
Nestled within the heart of Cocoa Beach, Lori Wilson Park is a picturesque oasis that offers a perfect blend of relaxation and outdoor adventures. The park has an expansive boardwalk, numerous picnic tables and shaded pavilions, relaxing coastal hammocks and a beautiful golden beach.
There are also numerous outdoor activities to enjoy from a beach volleyball court to the nature trail that winds through a maritime hammock of live oak and palmettoon. There is also a dedicated dog park where your four-legged friends can play and socialize.
Regular visitors to Cocoa Beach know that there is limited parking near the beaches. However, Lori Wilson Park is one of the few beach access spots that offers free parking.
9. Hit Up Downtown Cocoa Beach
For an authentic taste of the local scene, Downtown Cocoa Beach is the place to be. This vibrant hub embodies the essence of Cocoa Beach, offering a mix of entertainment, dining, and coastal charm.

It’s a fun and nostalgic experience for visitors of all ages, allowing you to immerse yourself in the whimsical world of Dorothy, Toto, and their friends.
In addition to exploring the exhibits, the museum also has fantastic gift shops offering a huge selection of Wizard of Oz-themed merchandise. So, put on your ruby slippers and embark on an adventure you won’t soon forget. We’re not in Kansas anymore, we’re in Cocoa Beach!

If you’re a fan of paleontology and all things prehistoric, a visit to the Dinosaur Store in Cocoa Beach is a must.
