Scubapro Jet Fin vs. Mares X-Stream fin (Buying Guide)

In order to get that good propulsion underwater, us divers need scuba fins. Sometimes it seems that there are as many fins to choose from as there are stars in the sky. Today we are going to compare two popular fins, the old Scubapro Jet and, the “newer” kid on the block, Mares X-Stream.

Plenty of fins out there to choose from, including the Scubapro Jet and Mares X-Stream.

Cost

When it comes to cost, both the Jet and X-Stream are about middle of the road, not cheap, but not going to break the bank either.

Here are the costs at the time of writing this article:

  • The Jet is listed for $217
  • The X-Stream is listed for $239.95

Overall Winner For Cost: Too close to call (it’s a tie). As far as price goes, both of these fins cost about the same amount of money.

While not the cheapest fins out there, neither the Jet or X-Stream will break the bank.

Fit/comfort

Scubapro Jet Fin

  • Open heel design (self adjusting spring)
  • Easy to take on and off
  • Sizing may run small
  • Criticism for being on the heavier side

X-Stream Fins

  • Open heel design with a bungee Strap
  • Easy to take on and off
  • Comfortable and true to size
  • Wrong backstraps can get shipped

Looking at reviews, it appears that there are some concerns with the Jet fins on size, being a little smaller on length and width than what is suggested in the size chart. As diver Gregory Cerrato writes on his Amazon review ” X-large is almost 2 sizes two small for size 13 with boots.” Additionally, the Jet fin gets some criticism as being a heavy fin, where reviewers praise the lightweight design of the X-Stream.

Both the Jet and X-Stream have open heels.

The X-Stream seems to be universally reviewed as being comfortable and true to size.

The X-Stream gets much praise for fit and lightweight design.

For what it’s worth, I like to use open toe fins – like the Go Sport fins. My toes always feel smooshed in closed toe fins – like in both of these options – but this is totally user choice/preference. You can read a separate review on the Go Sport fins that I own here.

Overall Winner For Fit/Comfort: X-Stream Fins

Durability

Scubapro Jet Fin

  • Made of solid rubber

X-Stream Fins

  • Made of a tri-material
  • May wear/break easier

The reason the Jet fin is heavier than the X-Stream is part of the same reason why the Jet is reported to be more durable than the X-Stream.

The Jet fins are a more basic flat fin design that is made of solid rubber. The X-Stream fins are made of a tri-material and have more intricate angles and curves that, over time, may be susceptible to wear and breakage. As diver MJK wrote in an Amazon review “Bought in Jun 2017, used for 55 dives when they broke. The plastic where it flexes broke leaving it supported only by the rubber so it now “flops” underwater and does not function.”

The solid rubber construction of the Jet Fin makes it highly rated in durability.

While the X-Stream fins should last you a good long time if you take care of them, the Jet fins are hard to beat in the durability category and top the X-Stream here.

Extra Considerations

The Jet fin is an old-school fin that has been around for over 50 years. Basically, it is a workhorse that has stood the test of time for recreational, commercial, military, and technical divers.

The vented design of the Jet fins is highlighted for its decreased drag on the upstroke and enhanced thrust on the downstroke. However, it has been described as “solid” and “stiff” by some divers.

The “Jet” part of the Jet fins are the vents.

The X-Stream fins have a channeled shape that is designed to move more water for greater thrust. They have a riddled foot pocket that is designed to allow water to flow through the pocket as opposed to trapping water in the pocket, which can cause drag.

The more modern X-Stream offers an advanced design to help you cut through the water.

Overall Winner

Both the Jet and X-Stream fins are good quality fins for about the same middle of the road price point. The main differences are that the X-Stream fins receive slightly better reviews when it comes to fit and weight, and the Jet receives better reviews with cost, durability, and versatility.

Like most scuba items, personal preference/needs will be the determining factor on what fin is better for you.

With that said though, if Scuba Jay was choosing between buying these two fin options, he would pick the Jet fins mainly for the durability and for them being tried and true.

And that’s the bottom line, cause Scuba Jay said so!

Scuba Jay picks the old tried and true Jet fin as the winner.
