Jumeirah Beach is located in the Jumeirah district of Dubai, along the Persian Gulf, and is an exceptional scuba diving destination with something for everyone. Beginners will find plenty of spots to explore, while more advanced divers will still enjoy the marine life and scenery. If you have never tried diving, but are interested, you can try a discover dive where an instructor gives you the basics and then takes you on a limited dive so you can join in on the fun.
Most dives will be at about 40ft deep. In the waters of Jumeriah Beach, divers can see plentiful colorful fish, sting rays, sea turtles and small reef sharks among the natural and artificial reefs…keep a look out for sea urchins too though!
Shipwrecks
Dubai has a good number of natural shipwrecks. Some of the most popular are the Zainab, MV Ludwig, Mariam Express and MV Dara.
Zainab
The Zainab is the most famous of the shipwrecks in Dubai and has a very colorful story. This 229ft long tanker lies at a depth of abut 95ft. As the story goes, in April 2001 she was smuggling 1,300 tons of Iraqi fuel into the UAE. In order to avoid being boarded by the US Navy, who were enforcing UN sanctions on Iraq, her 11 man crew deliberately sank her, resulting in a major oil spill.
She now lies on her port side and is fairly intact. over the years the Zainab has become an excellent artificial reef. Small oysters cover the wreck and plenty of small fish weave in and out of her structure, which can be penetrated by properly trained divers. Also on the wreck can be found barracuda, yellow snappers and batfish that usually hangout at the bridge and wheelhouse.
MV Ludwig
The MV Ludwig sank during a practice session and now lies on her port side in a maximum depth of about 98ft. She is mostly intact and also offers limited penetration, for those trained.
The Ludwig attracts a nice variety of marine life including batfish, damselfish, pennant fish, moray eels, sea squirts and the occasional eagle ray.
Mariam Express
The Mariam Express, is expressing no more, but makes for a nice wreck dive. This ferry was used to run goods between the UAE to Iraq and sank in 2006 due to a combination of strong currents and overloading. The wreck lies on her port side at depths between 59 and 82ft and is a very popular dive in Dubai.
At this site, divers can see spotted eagle and electric rays, nudibranchs, yellowtail barracuda and flatworms.
MV Dara
The MV Dara is a passenger/cargo ship that met a tragic end. In April 1961 she sank from an explosion and subsequent fire while returning to shore after riding out a storm. In total, 238 people made up of passengers and crew perished – leading to this wreck being referred to as “Dubai’s Titanic.”
The history is worth the dive alone, but divers can also see sea turtles, batfish and snapper.
Additional wrecks worth checking out while in Dubai include the Cement Barge – popular night dive and snorkeling spot – and the MV Victoria Star – newer wreck sitting almost upright in 72ft of water that sank in 2013 after a collision with another ship.
Sharm Rocks
Dubbed as a natural aquarium, Sharm Rocks is a must-visit diving destination in Dubai. Due to its three pinnacles, this site is also referred to as “three rocks.” With a variety of corals and fish species, it’s the perfect underwater playground for scuba diving enthusiasts. Divers at this site will encounter moray eels, pufferfish, lionfish, scorpionfish, clownfish and boxfish all thriving among beautiful pink and purple corals.
With depths between 33 to 72ft, Sharm Rocks is an amazing scuba diving spot for all level of divers and snorkelers too.
Martini Rock
Martini Rock is a remarkable diving spot that is also like a natural aquarium. It’s home to an abundance of vibrant aquatic fauna and alluring underwater landscapes. Dive into Martini Rock’s waters and marvel at the stunning habitat created by soft and hard corals.
With estimated depths between 30 -72ft, Martini Rock offers a one-of-a-kind underwater adventure for divers of various skill levels. Feast your eyes on the spectacular corals, dancing sea fans, and an array of aquatic life that calls Martini Rock their home. Here you can see damselfish, Fusiliers, sergeant majors, jawfish and green and hawksbill turtles.
Dubai World Islands
Dubai World Islands, a group of artificial islands (300) shaped like a world map, offer a novel experience for scuba diving enthusiasts in the UAE. Although the construction of these artificial islands has been criticized for negatively impacting the area’s marine flora and fauna, we’d be remiss to not mention this unique Dubai diving experience.
Diving at the World Islands offers an experience of both natural and artificial reefs with various aquatic life. The marvel of Islands make this a very unique scuba diving experience in the UAE. Also, the Zainab, MV Victoria Star and Mariam Express (see above) are close by the Islands, if you wanted to get some wreck dives in too.
Deep Dive Dubai
Of course you cannot visit Dubai and not dive the world’s deepest pool. At Deep Dive Dubai, you can scuba dive, snorkel and free dive a manmade sunken city. The pool – although that seems like a strange term applied here – is filled with over 3 million gallons of fresh water and is 197ft deep. Expert guides are available, if you’d like one.
Lost Chambers Aquarium
Located in Atlantis, The Palm, The Lost Chambers Aquarium proposes a scuba diving encounter unlike any other. With over 65,000 marine animals and 250 different species to encounter, this aquarium is a diver’s paradise.
The Lost Chambers Aquarium is open daily from 10 am to 9 pm, making it easy for visitors to schedule a dive, whether beginner or certified.
Shark Dives at Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo
For thrill-seekers and marine life enthusiasts, the Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo is an unforgettable experience with over 300 sharks and rays, including the world’s largest collection of Sand Tiger sharks.
Divers who brave the waters here will get up close to sand tiger, reef, leopard and tawny Nurse Sharks. Also in the waters are rays and numerous other marine species.
Please note too that the minimum age for participating in a shark dive is 10 years old. They offer dives for both certified and noncertified divers. This is a great way to get up close and personal with these majestic predators and feel like part of the aquarium, where you are one of the attractions.
Other Activities
Dubai isn’t a city you simply “visit”—it’s a place you experience in high-definition. One moment you’re standing on the world’s tallest building with the skyline glittering at your feet, and the next you’re wandering through a kaleidoscope of flowers blooming against the desert’s golden backdrop.
You might spend the afternoon lost in a mall so big it feels like its own country, then trade marble floors for shifting sand dunes as the sun sinks over the horizon. Whether it’s man-made marvels or the raw beauty of nature, Dubai has a way of making every moment feel larger than life. Somehow, it all fits into a single trip.
Burj Khalifa
Soaring 2,717ft into the desert sky, the Burj Khalifa is more than just the tallest building in the world — it’s Dubai’s ultimate “look at me” statement. From the moment you step into its high-speed elevator (which feels like being launched into orbit), you’re whisked to observation decks with jaw-dropping, 360-degree views that make the city below look like an architect’s miniature model. Sunset is especially magical as the golden light dances off the skyscrapers and desert beyond. For the extra-bold, the 148th floor offers a premium experience complete with refreshments and fewer crowds. It’s perfect for pretending you’re in your own private penthouse.
The Burj Khalifa has also had its share of Hollywood moments. If you’ve seen Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, you might recall Tom Cruise dangling on the side of the building with nothing but suction gloves between him and the ground. Standing there in person, you realize just how insane that stunt was (check out the behind the scenes of that clip below). Down at the building’s base, the Dubai Fountain comes alive every evening with music and water shows that rival anything in Las Vegas too.
Dubai Miracle Garden
Dubai isn’t the first place you’d expect to find a riot of blooms, but the Dubai Miracle Garden turns the middle of the desert into a full-on floral wonderland. Spanning over 780,000 sq ft, it’s a constantly evolving canvas of 150 million flowers arranged into arches, heart-shaped pathways, giant animals, and even a life-size Airbus A380 covered in blossoms. The colors are so vivid they almost seem digitally enhanced, yet they’re all real and maintained with meticulous care. Wandering through, you might feel like you’ve stumbled into a painter’s daydream, or perhaps joined Alice in Wonderland.
The Garden is also a showcase of Dubai’s “anything is possible” spirit. Every season, the designs change, so returning visitors always find new creations to marvel at. There’s an almost whimsical charm to it, with swings and gazebos tucked into corners and shaded pathways that offer sweet relief from the sun. If you time your visit for late afternoon, you can catch that magical golden light filtering through cascades of flowers too.
Note: Please keep in mind the Garden is temporarily closed as of August 2025, but is set to re-open.
The Dubai Mall
Calling The Dubai Mall a “shopping mall” feels like calling the ocean a “puddle.” Yes, there are over 1,200 shops ranging from high-street favorites to luxury boutiques, but this place is as much an entertainment hub as it is a retail paradise. You can ice skate on an Olympic-sized rink, gawk at sharks in the massive Dubai Aquarium (see above), or catch a movie in plush, reclining seats. Even just strolling the marble corridors feels like a mini world tour, as each section has its own style, from sleek modern design to lavish Middle Eastern touches. If you want an idea just how massive it is, note the walking tour video below that is two hours long!
The mall also connects directly to the Burj Khalifa and the Dubai Fountain, making it a natural part of a full day’s itinerary. In the evening, you can grab dinner at one of the restaurants with a terrace view of the fountain show — trust me, watching the water dance to Andrea Bocelli (no relation to Botticelli unfortunately) or Michael Jackson while you eat is something you’ll remember. Whether you’re here to shop, people-watch, or just escape the desert heat, The Dubai Mall is like a city within a city — only with better air-conditioning.
Desert Safari
If Dubai’s gleaming skyline is its glamorous public face, the desert is its timeless soul. A desert safari takes you out of the city and into an ocean of golden dunes that roll toward the horizon. The adventure usually begins with dune bashing — your driver accelerating, skidding, and climbing steep sandy slopes in a 4×4, all while you hang on with equal parts thrill and mild (or maybe extreme) panic. Sandboarding offers a gentler (but equally sandy) thrill, and camel rides slow the pace so you can take in the vast stillness around you.
As the sun sets, the dunes turn a warm shade of amber, and you’re guided to a Bedouin-style camp where traditional hospitality takes center stage. Picture low cushions, lantern-lit tents, aromatic shisha, and a buffet of grilled meats, fresh bread, and spiced rice. Performances range from hypnotic belly dancing to mesmerizing fire shows, and on clear nights, the stars seem impossibly bright. How cool is that?
Wrapping Things Up
In conclusion, Dubai offers a wealth of scuba diving destinations and unique experiences for divers of all skill levels. And during surface intervals there is plenty to see and do to keep you as busy as you’d like to be. Dubai is truly a desert oasis you’ll want to visit time and again.
